This is mainly for the benefit of the people new to the Cryptocurrency space.
Downloading & Installing MetaMask
The first thing needs to be done is actually just downloading MetaMask. You can access MetaMask here, and click the button indicated on the black arrow as shown, followed by Clicking “Install MetaMask for your browser”
They have an app on both iOS and Android, so you can install it on your mobile devices as well. Otherwise, they are downloaded as extensions for Microsoft Edge, Brave, Firefox and Google Chrome.
Setup Process
Once the download is complete, it’s going to take you through the setup process which you should follow step by step. The most important part of this process, is the 12 word seed phrase that you should write down and keep it somewhere safe.
The next part of the process is setting up the password that you use to actually access your Metamask wallet and account when on your browser.
Next Metamask will show you your 12-word seed phrase. I can’t reiterate this point enough that you should never share this seed phrase with anyone no matter who asks for it. If you let someone find out your seed phrase, you basically give them an all-access pass to your wallet.
Thereafter, it’s going to test that you’ve written them down, by either asking you to re-enter them or scramble them and let you pick the correct order.
Once that is complete, you have setup your Metamask wallet.
If you are on Google Chrome, you may have to click the Jigsaw Icon higlighted in red, and make sure that Metamask is pinned as shown in the white box, for the Metamask Icon to show up on the top right of your browser, that allows you to click and interact with its popup.
Settings
Before you get going, there’s a few things to know, the first one is that you can link it with your mobile device from here. By clicking on the round icon on the top right of the Metamask Extension Popup, you can navigate to settings > advanced.
Here there are two buttons, you can either sync with mobile if you choose to do so or reset the account which means all your transaction history will be removed but no changes to any of the balances.
Adding a Network
As you interact with cryptocurrency, you will find that not all projects will run on the Ethereum Mainnet, hence there is a need for you to add support for the network. Your wallet address remains the same though.
Click the “Ethereum Mainnet” button beside MetaMask’s Logo, then click “Add Network”, that should bring you to this screen below:
You need to fill in the Network Name, RPC URL, Chain ID, Currency Symbol & Block Explorer URL before you can add a network.

Adding a Token to MetaMask
Clicking on Metamask, you can scroll down your list of assets, and see a clickable “Import Token”. That’s where you can add a token to your MetaMask wallet.
There are two ways to add a trusted token to Metamask
- You have the contract address, from whatever token you are interacting with in which ever ecosystem, fill it into “Token Contract Address” and click “Add Custom Token” and you’re done.
- If the token is listed on either CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko, you can go to its listing page, and click the Metamask logo beside the contract address, to directly add it to your Metamask.
